For the equinox my midwife told me that she remembered Onni's birth has been one of her favorites. During these days I did feel that a cycle had ended and that we were starting a new stage, I was grateful that my midwife had that connection with us. My baby is now older, communicates better with the world, is very curious to learn, has his first two teeth and is already recognizing the first tastes. Everything seems fascinating to him in his little world and also to me.
Today I was watching him taste the beats my husband uses for his Buddhist practice and I thought about that moment when we discover the world through our mouth, so instinctive and animalistic is the act of tasting things with our tongue. Then I thought about how we lose that impulse to receive information through taste, as if we know everything, as if nothing surprises us anymore so much that there is no need to put it in our mouth.
I just tried to connect with that baby memory where I instinctively wanted to taste everything and I found it beautiful, to analyze objects in that way and give importance to the other senses since we live in such a visual era, we analyze and judge everything through what we see that it would be good to balance a little more our other senses and interpret our reality from other places.
During my pregnancy I felt an appetite like never before in my life, I felt like a professional soccer player after very heavy training. I remember one day I ate a sandwich in the street with such desperation that I stained my hair and clothes, I ate it the same way I now see my baby tasting food.
I always knew my son would be a foodie or something like that, I knew that appetite was not mine, but I love to feel it and I try to keep that record so I can nurture him and respect his relationship with food according to his own personality. That's the good thing about having a baby in the womb for nine months, somehow I got to know him from the inside and every time I didn't eat enough my husband told me that I felt hopeless with life.
The message from my midwife made me remember my birth and my pregnancy and feel satisfied with everything I had experienced so far with Onni. Our birth was intense, beautiful and transformative. My doula made me read a text by Whapio Diane Barlet who said that if we gave ourselves enough to the subconscious experience of giving birth we would receive an instruction manual to be able to take care of our baby.
It's nice to remember this because every time I feel lost or disoriented in my experiences as a mom, I can go back to those memories where I crossed the portal of life to bring my baby into the world.
